Natural Enrichment
Live Plants
Live plants are not optional — they are essential for a thriving chameleon. They provide cover, humidity, natural climbing structures, and psychological security.
Safe Plant Species
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
The #1 recommended chameleon plant. Hardy, grows in low light, provides excellent cover. Trailing vines create natural pathways.
Schefflera (Umbrella Plant)
Large leaves provide excellent cover and perching opportunities. Easy to care for and grow quickly.
Ficus benjamina
Popular choice but note: some animals may be sensitive to the sap. Provides good structure and dense foliage.
Hibiscus
Chameleons enjoy nibbling on hibiscus leaves and flowers — safe and nutritious. Requires more light than most.
Dracaena
Sturdy stalks provide great perching. Several species are safe for chameleons.
Bromeliads
Beautiful and functional — water collects in the cups, providing natural drinking spots.
Weeping Fig (Ficus pumila)
Climbing fig great for providing a natural-looking environment. Dense coverage.
Setup Tips
- 🌿Rinse all plants thoroughly before placing in the enclosure to remove pesticides
- 🌿Use organic soil or coco fiber as a substrate — avoid fertilized potting soil
- 🌿Place taller plants toward the back and lower ones toward the front
- 🌿Ensure there are multiple horizontal branches or vines for perching at various heights
- 🌿Dense foliage provides the security chameleons need — the more cover, the better
- 🌿Replace any plants that develop disease or pest infestations immediately
⚠️ Plants to Avoid
Pothos is listed as toxic to mammals but is safe for reptiles. However, avoid: Philodendron, Dieffenbachia, Croton, and any plants treated with systemic pesticides. When in doubt, research before placing any new plant in the enclosure.
